A Visit from our very own Young Scientist Shauna O Neill

Before we broke for our Midterm Break we were treated to an extremely interesting visitor, our very own Shauna O Neill, a past pupil of the school. Shauna spoke to all the pupils about her love of science and where that has taken her, even as far as Arizona last year! Shauna encouraged all the pupils to explore science and more importantly to have fun doing so. Read on to hear all about her exciting projects in the world of Science:
Two years ago Shauna won third prize in the Technology Intermediate Individual category and last year Shauna moved into the major winners category when she was awarded ‘Individual runner-up’. Her project ‘The effect of static magnetic fields on molecular and macroscopic properties of water’ gained huge recognition and it was marvelous for her that her hard work was rewarded with this major award. Shauna is now preparing for her Leaving Cert in Scoil Muire gan Smal, Roscommon and it is a credit to her school that they can have a student competing at the very highest level over a sustained period of time. After the success of last year Shauna took home a trophy and a cheque for €1,200 and also was awarded the Intel prize. The Intel award is given to the best project in the chemical, physical and mathematical sciences category, and Shauna won a trip for herself and her teacher to Arizona to the annual Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) last May.
Huge congratulations to Shauna and best of luck with further projects.

Shauna also shared some information from a recent school tour to Poland, where she visited a concentration camp. Shauna spoke to 5th and 6th class about her experience there. It was a real eye opener for everyone.
Thanks again Shauna for coming back to your roots.
