Litter and Waste, Energy, Water, Travel, and Green Home Flags

Each year we work hard to keep up the good work we put in place for each of the previous flags we have been awarded since becoming a green school in 2000.

We appoint litter and energy wardens and regularly rotate this job among the pupils. Their job is to inspect the other classrooms and award them points for meeting certain criteria. The following are the things they check:-
1.  Are lights and computers switched off when not in use?
2.  Are taps turned off and not dripping?
3.  Is the floor/tables/room clean and tidy?
4.  Is rubbish in the correct bins - landfill/recycle/compost?
5.  Are pupils taking home as much pupil litter from lunches as possible?
6.  Is the classroom door closed at lunch/breaktimes to ensure heat is retained in the room?

So there is healthy competition between the classrooms to see which room is the "greenest room" each week.

We have also re-introduced a safe composting bin that is completely sealed and therefore cannot attract vermin to school grounds. Two children are appointed each week to collect composting materials from each class and the staffroom and use this to feed our worms in the wormeries and the remainder goes into the compost bin to produce lovely organic fertilizer and compost for our school garden.

We appoint hi-glo silver champions and seatbelt sheriffs who escort the children to the gates in hi-viz jackets and ensure that those on the bus are wearing seatbelts.

We also regularly run LENREC recycling days where parents and families in the wider community are informed and encouraged to bring bags of recyclable clothing, footwear and linens to the school for recycling collections and indeed we have a clothes bank in the school ground which raises funds for Cancer Care.

We run and promote WOW/COW days as a means of travelling to school when the weather is fine.

We ran a pedal powered cinema in Ballyleague hall as a novel way of revisiting our Energy flag work and raising much needed funds in an environmentally friendly way. On the day we had parents, past pupils and friends from the wider community helping to cycle in teams of 8 to produce the electricity to run the film for the enjoyment of the children, their families and a great number of supporters from the wider community.

We have errected water butts to collect much needed rain water to maintain our garden, window boxes and frog plaza water supplies and assist with lowering the water bills.

We have links to the Green Schools Ireland website and the Irish water website where parents and children can get further information and tip on each flag under the For Parents page click Green Flag Tips for the Home
