Congratulations to 5th & 6th Class, Winners of SciFest 2015
Cloontuskert NS
Winning Primary School at SciFest 2015. There was plenty of reason to celebrate in Cloontuskert NS on November 11th when the pupils from 5th and 6th class took part in the Scifest Fair in Lanesboro Community College and came home victorious, after being announced as the Overall Winners of the Primary School Section at SciFest. Not only the overall winners at the science fair but also were declared the first primary school in the country to have been awarded this title. Cloontuskert NS submitted a project on “How the Worm Works”, inspired by the school’s worm farm which was introduced to the school last year as part of the Green School’s Biodiversity Flag. The pupils researched the work of the earthworm and wowed the judges with their excellent visual displays, report book, experiment and also their ability to answer questions and explain their project’s results and conclusions. As part of the project the pupils showed the judges “Worm Tea” or what they explained to the judges, is the produce of the hard working worms in their wormery. This will be used in the school garden as an organic liquid fertiliser. After the judging the pupils expressed their delight at having picked up the title and the very proud scientists returned to the school to deliver the good news. Andrée Gallagher, Principal of Cloontuskert National congratulated the pupils at a recent school assembly saying, “The pupils were a credit to the whole school community and should be very proud of their achievement. The school was then awarded their trophy from Michael Lyons of Lanesboro Community College, on behalf of SciFest Ireland. |
