CLOONTUSKERT NS WINNERS AT SCIFEST 2016

Picture
We were all delighted to hear that Cloontuskert NS once again won the Primary School Overall Prize at this year's SciFest. The standard was very high once again this year with other schools submitting excellent and more importantly very interesting experiments on the day. Well done to all those students who took part.
This year we submitted two very different and fantastic projects to the Scifest Fair in Lanesboro Community College.
A huge amount of work went into these projects and it all paid off for the pupils in the end as they were awarded the Best Overall Primary School Trophy. Many thanks to everyone who assisted the pupils, fellow students, teachers and of course the parents.
Well done to Éabha, Keisha, Eoin, Melanie & Katie. You can find out all about their projects below.
Do different types of water affect
the growth and health of plants?
Project Title: Do different types of water affect the growth and health of plants?

The Team: Eoin Murray, Melanie Banahan, Katie Murray

Hypothesis:
Our hypothesis is that different types of water really do affect the growth and health of plants.
How we did the experiment:
We got five plants of the same species (violas).
We replanted the plants in bigger pots.
Gather the four different types of water.
We watered the plants with 50ml of water.
Keep all plants under the same conditions.
record growth and put into charts.
Results:
We found that the plant that grew the most was the one we watered with rainwater.
Conclusions:
We can conclude that the plant that grew the most was the the plant we watered with rain water. It grew the most because rainwater is the purest water a plant can have because there is no chemical added or nutrients taken away in the process of purifying.
Our experience at Scifest: we had a brilliant day at Scifest. We really enjoyed telling the judges all about our project and we also enjoyed looking at the other projects. The chicken rolls and curry were really nice as well.
How & Why does Yeast rise bread?
Project title: How and Why does Yeast rise bread?

The Team: Keisha and Éabha

Hypothesis: Our hypothesis states that bread will not rise without leavening agents such as yeast.

How we did the experiment: We did two experiments. We baked two loaves of bread; One with yeast and one without yeast. We also mixed yeast, warm water and sugar together to blow up balloons and show how yeast reacts when mixed with sugar and warm water.

Results: The results of our bread experiment the bread without yeast was doughy, hard to cut and tasteless. The bread with yeast was fluffy and tasty. Our second experiment shows that the more sugar mixed with yeast and warm water the more the bread will rise. Bottle 3 had the most gas in it and the control bottle had no gas at all.

Conclusions: Without yeast bread won't rise.

Our experience at Scifest: We really enjoyed the experience at Scifest. It was interesting to see all the science projects. Everyone was coming and taking bits of the bread because nobody had break so everyone was really hungry. It was a great day. The chicken rolls and chicken curry was delicious. We now know the standard for the secondary school projects. The excitement of the pupils when we came back was electric.
